Congress topic and subtopics

For the 17th ISHPES Congress, researchers are invited to submit papers related to “Sites of sport in history” – these words being taken in their widest sense. Papers are expected to meet the following sub-themes or one of the three specific symposia:

Sub-themes:

  • Globalisation and glocalisation of sports cultures
  • The spreading of sports cultures: acculturation and innovation
  • Sports facilities: architectures and urban planning
  • Outdoor sports in nature and cities
  • Indoor sports and spatial segregation
  • Sport as a contested space
  • Gendered sports sites
  • Sport in figurative space: art, literature, film
  • Sports heritage and sites of memory
  • Physical education and sport in schools/colleges/universities
  • Welfare state and urban planning in sport
  • Open paper

Symposia:

  • Health promotion and sports sites
  • Sports sites in closed institutions
  • Conflict of land use in sports and tourist areas

Guidelines for abstract submission

1. Abstract submission is exclusively online via the ISHPES Conference Submission Page.

2. The online form will invite you to inform the following points :

A. Name of the author(s), your institutional affiliation and position, your office and mobile phone numbers, and email addresses.

B. The paper’s title followed by a 300 words (maximum) abstract of the proposed paper. The abstract should include the question(s) addressed in the paper, the evidence to be used, a precise statement of the argument and conclusions, and what significance the paper has to our understanding of sports history.

C. Please specify also to what sub-theme or symposium your abstract is related.

3. All abstracts will be assessed by two members of the scientific committee.

The official language of the congress is English.

Presenters need to be an ISHPES member to present a paper, and a person can only present one paper as first author. Join ISHPES now.

Skispuren Ski tracks: International Conference on the History of Winter Sports 2015

“Ski tracks” is the name of an international conference which will focus on the history of winter sport and especially the traditions of skiing. It takes place from 10th to 14th December 2015 in the Ski Austria Academy in St. Christoph am Arlberg. The conference will conclude an exhibition project in Tyrol and Vorarlberg entitled “ARLBERG. Pass.Region.Marke”. The location was chosen deliberately: In the former Bundessportheim St. Christoph significant Austrian ski pioneers as Hannes Schneider, Ernst Janner, Stefan Kruckenhauser and Franz Hoppichler developed their methods of instruction.

At the same time the network meeting for Austrian sports history, SPORTHISTNET, will be organized.

The conference languages are German and English.

2015 Junior Scholar Winners

The 2015 Routledge Junior Scholar Presentation Award winner is Taro Obayashi, University of Tsukuba, Japan for his engaging, informative conference presentation “Recovery from the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 through Sport Events in Tokyo City.” Taro Obayashi’s award is £75 in books from Routledge.

The 2015 Gigliola Gori Junior Scholar Award Prize recipient is Dario Nardini. The Italian scholar wrote the most outstanding, unpublished essay.

2015 ISHPES Honorees: Bandy and Müllner

The year’s ISHPES honorees are Susan J. Bandy, winner of the Rutledge Keynote Award, and Rudolf Müllner, winner of the ISHPES Award. Both Bandy and Müllner gave keynote lectures at the 2015 ISHPES Congress in Split, Croatia.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS 

We invite you to submit abstracts within the announced topic and subtopics of the Conference.

Participants are invited to submit their abstracts for podium/oral presentations only.

Any submitted paper or abstract will be internationally reviewed and evaluated in order to decide on its acceptance. Nevertheless, the submitting authors are responsible for the statements and views expressed in their works, as well as for the editing style and quality of language. The official language of the Congress is English. Only the accepted abstracts will be included in the Scientific Program and printed in the Book of Abstracts provided that the submitting author (the first author) has paid the fee.

All abstracts must fit within the allotted size requirement to be considered for review. The abstract must be 350 words or less including title, names of the author(s) and affiliation(s).

Editing guidelines: Print the title of the abstract in capital letters, centered; a single blank line follows, then come the full names of the author(s), separated by commas; introduce the last complete name by “and”. Underline the presenter.  There should be no blank line-separation between author(s) and affiliation(s). Relate each author to the respective institution(s) by an identification number in the superscript. Institutions should be introduced by their identification number, the name of the institution, city, and country. Institutions should be separated by semicolons. The identification number is redundant if all the authors are affiliated with the same institution. A single blank line should separate the affiliation(s) from the abstract. Please, omit any university degrees and positions, titles, streets, etc.

Submitting abstracts: All abstracts should be submitted online via the 2015 Congress website.

2015 Gigliola Gori Junior Scholar Award – Call for Applications

ISHPES is currently accepting applications for the 2015 Junior Scholar Award. The ISHPES GIGLIOLA GORI JUNIOR SCHOLAR AWARD will be presented at the 2015 ISHPES Seminar to be held in Split, Croatia.

It is awarded for an unpublished essay of outstanding quality in the field of sport history. Eligible scholars must be a member of ISHPES and a registered student (undergraduate or graduate) at the time of the Congress or a junior scholar (within one year of receiving a PhD). The essay must be submitted in English and the text itself (including notes and bibliography) must not exceed 10,000 words.
