PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Welcome to Oslo

Dear fellow sport historians and enthusiasts! Here at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences (NIH) neighboring the wide-ranging Nordmarka wilderness area and the beautiful lake Sognsvann, we are excited to welcome you all to ISHPES’ annual conference in Oslo 2022. Home to the world’s first 50 km ski race in 1888, our capital vibrates with the continuous ripples of human sporting activity and a history of winter sports especially. During this conference, we hope to give attendees memorable encounters with some of the historical locations in our city that have weaved sport into the cultural fabric of society in the Nordics, including a tour through 4000 years of ski history at the Ski Museum and a banquet at Holmenkollen where our “second national day”, the National Ski Festival, continues to be a yearly people’s event. We hope to see you here next June!

TRANSPORTATION

The conference venue (at NIH) is located 7 kilometres from the Oslo city centre, just next to the woods and the beautiful lake Sognsvann.

From the City centre and Ullevaal stadium to the conference venue (NIH) and Olympiatoppen Sports Hotel
Main public transport is the westbound line metro number 5 “Sognsvann” to the end station – Sognsvann. This line travels from the city centre via Ullevaal stadium. At the station, you will find the NIH immediately at your left-hand side, and Olympiatoppen Sports hotel 100 meters north of the metro station.

A little headsup on our metro system: line 5 comes in two versions, both “5 Ringen” and “5 Sognsvann”. The former goes for an extra round around the city before changing name and heading for Sognsvann. You should therefore not take 5 Ringen to get to NIH, as this will take you through the whole loop.

To get tickets for the metro, bus or tram in Oslo it is highly recommended to download the Ruter app
 Single ticket (1 hour) – 4 Euro
 24 hours – 12 Euro
 7 days – 33 Euro

Camping – The reasonable fresh air offer

For those of you who prefer a less expensive stay, we offer camping in tents or lavvus just outside the conference venue. We provide tent/lavvu; YOU MUST bring sleeping bag and groundsheet/sleeping mat for camping. Price for tent during the conference is 1500 NOK. It includes breakfast inside, at the NIH canteen, access to other indoor facilities; toilet, shower, dressing room and locker, electricity for charging of mobile phones etc., and microwave oven/refrigerator for warming/storing food (which you buy yourself).

The tents vary in size, they can accomodate from 1 to 6 persons, depending on your choice. Even if there is bad weather and rain, we, unfortunately, do not have alternatives and the tents must be used. Weather at this time of year is normally nice and relatively warm, but no guarantees can be given. We therefore recommend that you bring some warm clothes for the night.

As the camping area is limited, we will restrict the number of campers to max. 20. The first to sign in, will be prioritized.
